No More Antifouling Paint? Sailors' Evening at the GSC Clubhouse

Open to members and guests: Grömitz Sailing Club's sailing evening on the topic of environmentally friendly alternatives to antifouling paint.

The sailing season is coming to an end. Boat owners are already starting to think about winter maintenance on their boats. So at our next open sailing evening, we’ll be asking: Never have to apply antifouling again? Is that possible—and does it make sense?

To that end, we invited Rik Breur to our clubhouse at the Grömitz harbor to introduce us to the innovative Dutch boat-wrapping system from “Finsulate.”

Thanks to a patented fiber structure, it prevents barnacles and algae from adhering permanently through purely mechanical means—without releasing any biocides or microplastics into the waterway. In addition to protecting the environment, the system has a service life of at least 8 years and saves owners the trouble of repainting every year.

“As sailors, we love nature and the waters right on our doorstep. That’s why it’s so important to us to actively protect Lübeck Bay,” explains Uwe Schellin of the GSC board. “At the same time, every boat owner is happy to have less work during winter storage. We warmly invite anyone in the region who’s interested to come learn about this exciting, sustainable alternative in a relaxed atmosphere—and to get to know the Grömitz Sailing Club in the process.”

The event will take place on Friday, September 18, at 8:00 p.m. at the Grömitz Sailing Club (Jachthafen 4). After the presentation, the evening will conclude with a chance to share experiences at the beautiful bar in the GSC clubhouse, which overlooks the Baltic Sea. Admission is free, but requires informal registration in advance by September 15 via email to martin.brasch@gsc-ev.de.

All other dates can be found on the GSC website at German Science Center.
