Grömitz Tourism Service Launches First Sustainability Project: 300 Insect Hotels for the Community

The Grömitz Tourism Service is implementing its first project funded by the environmental fee introduced last year: 300 insect hotels were ordered from NABU and are now available free of charge to residents of the municipality. Each household can pick up one insect hotel upon presentation of an ID card at the Tourist Information Office on the pier forecourt or at the municipal office at Neuer Markt 1.

“With this project, we want to actively contribute to the protection of insects, because they are essential to our ecosystem. Bees, butterflies, and other insects play a central role in pollinating plants and contribute significantly to biodiversity,” says Manfred Wohnrade, operations manager at Tourismus-Service Grömitz. “Our goal is to promote nature in our region in a sustainable way—and with these insect hotels, we’re taking another important step toward that goal.”

“I would like to sincerely thank the parking space operators for their understanding and support of the environmental fee. It’s great to see that, together, we can implement the first projects and thereby make a valuable contribution to our environment,” Wohnrade continued.

Insect hotels provide valuable shelters and nesting sites for wild bees, ladybugs, and other beneficial insects. Given the increasing loss of natural habitats, these artificial shelters are an important measure for safeguarding the populations of these animals and preserving biodiversity.

The environmental fee, which is levied on event site fees, helps fund sustainable projects in Grömitz. The Tourism Service will soon announce the second project funded by the sustainability grant.
