Grömitz Tourism Service Launches Second Sustainability Project

After a water dispenser was installed in early March with the support of the Association of Friends and Supporters of the Schools in Grömitz, all students and teachers now had the opportunity to receive personalized water bottles. The project was largely funded by the Grömitz Tourism Service using the sustainability fee collected from events.

“We’re pleased that this initiative allows us to make another important contribution to sustainability at our school,” says Principal Jan-Eric Hertwig. “Thanks to the personalized water bottles, our students can make the most of the water dispenser while avoiding single-use plastic.”

The sustainability initiative was funded by the environmental levy collected by the Grömitz Tourism Service, which raised a total of 7,000 euros last year. Half of this amount has already been invested in the “Insect Hotels for Locals” project, which provided residents with nesting aids for wild bees and other beneficial insects free of charge. Now, the second environmental project—water bottles for the community school—is underway.

“With the environmental allowance, we are implementing targeted sustainable measures that benefit both nature and the community,” says Manfred Wohnrade, operations manager at Tourismus-Service Grömitz. “The water bottles for the students are a practical step toward environmental protection and health promotion.”

The new water bottles actively help reduce waste by cutting down on the use of single-use plastic. They are also made of durable, recyclable materials, thereby promoting the conscious and sustainable use of resources.

The water dispenser, which has been in use at the school since March, provides fresh, chilled water and thus contributes to the healthy diets of children and adolescents.
