Four attractions, one new favorite spot: Grömitz opens "Dünenwelten"

Four attractions, one new favorite spot: Grömitz opens "Dünenwelten"

New recreation and event center right on the Baltic Sea opens on October 2

After more than two and a half years of construction, the time has finally come: Grömitz will open “Dünenwelten” on October 2, 2026. Located right in the “Dünenpark” and directly on the Baltic Sea, a new year-round leisure and event venue is being built on a total area of approximately 3,500 square meters.

The "Dünenwelten" project marks the completion of the overall "Dünenpark" project in Grömitz. The groundbreaking ceremony for the redevelopment of the approximately 22,000-square-meter site, located directly on the beach, took place on July 14, 2021. Approximately 12.5 million euros were invested in the new building. Of this amount, 8.3 million euros came from a grant from the state of Schleswig-Holstein.

“With Dünenwelten, we are closing a major chapter in the development of our ‘Dünenpark’ and, at the same time, opening a new one,” says Manfred Wohnrade, operations manager of Tourismus-Service Grömitz and managing director of the municipally owned Grömitzer Freizeit und Tourismus GmbH, which operates Dünenwelten. “We’ve created a place here that brings together all kinds of people. Families can play and run around, friends can go bowling, and companies or clubs can hold meetings and celebrations—all right on the Baltic Sea, regardless of the weather.”

Four Worlds Under One Roof

The "Dune Worlds" concept is based on four different offerings that function independently but can also be combined:

PLAY → BOWLING → DINE → MEETINGS

The centerpiece for families is the approximately 1,000-square-meter Tobedüne. This maritime indoor play world brings the Baltic Sea and dune landscape into the building and offers children from 0 to about 12 years of age exercise, play, and adventure all year round. More than 25 play structures and attractions are waiting to be discovered—including a coral reef with climbing nets and a tunnel slide, a giant crab, a snail shell slide, a sandcastle obstacle course, and trampolines. Dedicated party areas also make the Tobedüne the perfect venue for children’s birthday parties.

“It was important to us to create a play environment that truly feels like Grömitz. We want children to be able to experience the Baltic Sea, the dunes, and the seaside setting here in a playful way,” said Wohnrade.

The Tobedüne is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Tobeticket costs 10 euros per person; children up to and including age two are admitted free. During the winter months (1.11.26 – 25.3.27), the winter ticket is available for 39 euros per person per month, which allows for unlimited admission from Monday through Friday.

Grand Opening Program at the Tobedüne

To kick off “Dünenwelten,” a varied opening program awaits young visitors to the Tobedüne from October 2 through 4. On all three opening days, children can try out various hands-on and creative activities and explore the new play area together with their families.

October 2–4 | Opening program at the Tobedüne:

· Daily from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Shipbuilding workshop for children

· Daily from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.: “Open Juggling Kit”

· Daily from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.: Magic & balloon twisting with Captain Kümmel

· Daily from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Face painting for kids

All program items are free of charge and already included in the admission price for the Tobedüne.

Bowling with a Baltic Sea Flair

Right next to the Tobedüne is the Dünenbowling, which features four modern bowling lanes. In addition to traditional bowling, the lanes can also be used for interactive games in which different game worlds are projected onto the lanes.

Whether it's a family outing, a children's birthday party, a club party, a company outing, or a tournament: Up to six people can play per lane. Dünenbowling is open daily from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.

This creates an offering that combines leisure time with shared experiences—for locals and vacationers alike.

Meetings and Celebrations with a View of the Sea

The Dünebühne is located on the upper floor of Dünenwelten. The event space can accommodate up to 300 people and, thanks to its large windows and spacious terrace, offers a direct view of the Baltic Sea, the beach, the beach club, the promenade, and the pier.

The rooms can be used flexibly in various sizes and are therefore suitable for conferences and seminars as well as for conventions, corporate events, anniversaries, club celebrations, concerts, and other events. Modern event technology, Wi-Fi, and customizable catering round out the offerings.

As a result, the Dünebühne also specifically caters to groups, companies, and business travelers. Grömitz is thus expanding its offerings in the conference and event sector with an extraordinary venue right on the water.

“The Dünebühne is a particularly important component for us because it allows us to reach new target groups even outside the traditional vacation season. After all, a conference with a view of the Baltic Sea is something special,” explains Wohnrade.

The Schlemmerdüne: A Break with a Breath of Baltic Sea Air

Rounding out these four attractions is the Schlemmerdüne, the family-friendly restaurant at Dünenwelten. It serves visitors to the Tobedüne and the bowling alley, as well as guests attending conferences and events on the upper floor.

The menu features simple classics and light snacks for guests of all ages. In the evening, Schlemmerdüne offers drinks and a small snack menu, especially for bowling guests.

This makes it easy to combine the various activities: For example, a children’s birthday party can be paired with Tobedüne, bowling, and dining, while companies can use the Dünebühne for meetings and the bowling alley to wind down after a day of conferences.

An important component of year-round tourism

A key objective of Dünenwelten is to boost off-season and year-round tourism. The facility operates regardless of sun, rain, wind, or storms, thereby creating a new, weather-independent leisure and event venue right on the Baltic Sea.

When the grant notification was presented in November 2023, Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister of Economic Affairs and Tourism, Claus Ruhe Madsen, emphasized the importance of weather-independent attractions for extending the tourist season. The state provided 8.3 million euros in funding for the multifunctional building.

“We want to further develop tourism in the state in a way that is both high-quality and sustainable. An important part of this is not just having a full house during the summer months,” Madsen explained at the time. With the Dünenwelten, Grömitz will become a more sustainable tourist destination; at the same time, these offerings also improve the quality of life for local residents.”

With this opening, that goal is now becoming a reality: Dünenwelten is explicitly aimed not only at vacationers, but also at locals, families, children and teenagers, clubs, businesses, groups, and event organizers.

The final component of the Dünenparks

The opening of Dünenwelten also marks the completion of the final phase of the overall “Dünenpark” project. Since the groundbreaking in July 2021, the beachfront area has undergone a fundamental transformation. The former site surrounding the old outdoor pool and recreation center has been transformed into a modern, versatile open space right on the Baltic Sea.

“When we look at the ‘Dünenpark’ today, we can already feel a little proud,” says Manfred Wohnrade. “The ‘Dünenwelten’ are the final piece of the puzzle—and perhaps the one that brings the entire concept together once again. Outside, there’s the “Dünenpark” with its proximity to the beach and the sea; inside, there are games, sports, dining, and events all year round. This way, we’ve created a place that works even when the weather is typically North German.”

The Dünenwelten are thus set to become a year-round gathering place by the sea—for vacations as well as for spontaneous day trips, children’s birthday parties, family afternoons, club events, corporate events, and conferences.

Dünenwelten Grömitz will open its doors on October 2, 2026.
